Artist's Comments

On my slightly ranty comic blog, I have a proper mock-up cover, but I didn't want to post it here in full since I did use an official logo. However, if you visit the blog, you'll see my reasonings behind this: basically it is a criticism of how Green Arrow's character has become synonymous with really awkward "socially relevant" stories, like the painfully bad "Speedy the Junkie" episode and whatnot.

Basically this picture is an attempt to show, in one image, how ludicrous most of these stories come off as being, and how self-defeating most of them ended up being as well. They're just...so ridiculous!

That having been said, you can always enjoy the picture without even thinking about anything else. I mean, Ollie in drag is always a bonus.

LOL! I don't know the backstory but seeing this makes me laugh! The guy in drag with his blonde facial hair, not to mention the pose, really makes this artwork shine. :+fav:

Wow. Y'know, I recently read 'Hard-Traveling Heroes' (TPB at the library, yay libraries!); it reads rather cheesy now, but back then, you have to remember, they still had to work around the Comic Code. And you have to at least give them kudos for trying to be relevant.

Having said that, I'm now delivering the curse of a thousand papercuts to you for putting this ghastly image in my head and causing me to not be able to sleep! I think you did Hal and Ollie here very well, although, honestly, if it were me, I think I would have made the dress green, at least. And I would have HAD to have Black Canary in it!

Libraries really are great. At least, if they bother to stock some of the stuff...

I do agree that some of the HTH stuff is okay sometimes, it's just that it was terribly uneven, and honestly there was a lot of stuff (like the absolutely awful Speedy Does Drugs story) that was so clumsily done. At the time there were a lot of superior stories that had some social relevance but weren't nearly as ballyhooed as the HTH ones...but then the HTH stint wasn't very well-received either. Green Lantern's book ended anyway (and a relief if you ask me, after reading the last few)!

The Comics Code though, surprisingly, only asked for a single panel to be changed from the original on the Speedy thing, because it showed shooting up too explicitly, and they thought it would be upsetting. When DC went to them about the story, they were very enthusiastic and cooperative, which is something that surprises a lot of people! I think apparently everyone had presumed and nobody had actually *asked* before. It's a really strange story behind the scenes...if only it were that interesting in the comics!

Thank you so much for the compliment. I am so glad you commented, and I hope you don't mind my vast discussion -- I'm a longtime comic enthusiast and analyst. It gets me all excited to talk about these things!

I was going to make the dress green, but I thought pink would be funnier. To me, nothing quite communicates the forced circumstances of the time as a completely unsuitable colour. Like Ollie says he has to live as a gay black woman, despite not really doing a good job of any of them, and doing it in as ridiculous a way as possible...

That is such a good idea though. Canary would be hilarious to see in that. Maybe I'll do another one...although it was hard enough to do this one, I kept laughing when I'd look at Ollie!

I do these little off-the-cuff comments of scenes...sometimes they get turned into actual pictures (such as here)...and I forget how the specific one went, but it ended up with Dinah saying 'Ollie...and I mean this in every sense of the word...you are a queen.'
